Special Lecture by François-Valentin Clerc, a Ph.D. from the University of Geneva

We invited François-Valentin Clerc, a Ph.D, to give a special lecture in Professor Hashino‘s course (Comparative Economic History) during the first semester of this academic year.

François-Valentin Clerc, a Ph.D. candidate in social and economic history, came from the University of Geneva to give a lecture on Comparative Economic History. Economic history is often regarded as the story of a single country, but he focuses on the interactions between countries or regions. He is exploring the broad but important theme of how raw silk exported from Japan to France was evaluated in French market from the end of the Edo period to the middle of the Meiji period, how it competed with other products, and how it influenced the silk reeling industry in Japan. The students listened to his lecture with great interest, thinking about what happened in other countries in Europe and Asia. It is wonderful to have guest speaker(s) bring a breath of fresh air to the classroom.
