Summary Report of KIMAP Guest Lecture by Professor Janet Hunter

Saji Emeritus Professor Janet Hunter from London School of Political Science visited us to deliver a lecture for the Comparative Economic History course. Under the theme “Mobilizing Human Resources to Build a Communications Network: Another Dimension of Japan’s Intensive Industrialization?”, she discussed not only the social impact of the policies and technological innovations introduced by the Meiji Ministry of Communications but also the role played by local elites in supporting these efforts. She had previously given a seminar presentation at Kobe University about 15 years ago. On both occasions, the students listened seriously and engaged in meaningful discussions. Having visited Japan more than 50 times, she told us that our campus is the most beautiful in Japan, which made us feel so proud (Tomoko Hashino, Professor of Economic History).
